The wise men of the past knew that silence was the key to awareness. The awareness of those things both internal and external. "Silence is the best gift you can give" it is said. They knew when you open your mouth and talk you are projecting out into the world YOUR perceptions of reality NOT the person you are with. When we talk about behavior we are speaking of our perceptions. When we gather together and explore ideas we are examining "what do you see" and attempt to validate common assessments. The seeds of hate, anger, disgust all reside in us but will you water them or leave them in the silent darkness protecting them from sprouting and then taking root? We are all guilty of falling short but if we have a hoe, we can root out these issues way before we need a chainsaw!
